Air Quality & Transportation Alternatives
Regardless of age, income, ethnicity or geographic region, Atlanta regional residents recognize that air pollution and traffic congestion are significant factors in daily life.
The good news is that in hard numbers, the Atlanta region is making progress. Since 2000, ozone levels are down; transit options such as rail, buses and commuter vans have increased. We have more miles of high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes on crucial highways and more pathways for bicycles and pedestrians. We have numerous programs under development across the region, including Livable Centers Initiatives and transit-oriented developments, designed to restructure home-work-shopping patterns so residents have less need to drive.
While public transit options have increased in the region, according to the 2005 survey many regional residents can not, do not or simply will not use public transit or other transportation alternatives as long as individual motor vehicle use is equally convenient and affordable. Survey results indicated residents widespread concerns about inaccessibility, inconvenience and continued resistance to public transit:
- 72 percent of respondents told us there was no "relatively easy way" for them to get to work by bus or train.
- Among these respondents, 36 percent said they would never use public transit even if it were available.
- 23 percent of respondents said commuting by public transit was relatively easy for them.
- Of these respondents, 60 percent said they never used public transit -- even though it was easy and nearby.
