GOAL 10: Increase access to affordable housing near places people work across the region.
INDICATOR: Average (mean) length of workers' daily commute times.
Why is this important?
Ideally, workers should be able to afford to live near their jobs and avoid a long commute. Long automobile commutes are expensive, contribute to air pollution, and leave residents less time for their families and community activities.
How are we doing?
According to the most recent statistics available (2005), the average daily commute to work in the U.S. is 25.1 minutes - but in the 28-county Atlanta metro area, count on nearly an extra six minutes each way.
Commute times around metro Atlanta seem to be getting incrementally longer. Federal statistics released in 2005 peg the average daily commute time in the 28-county metro Atlanta area at 31.1 minutes for 2004. While this may seem exhausting the actual commute increased by only .7 minutes from 2004.
