Why is this important?

Preserving the region's historic properties encourages a sense of shared community and enhances economic opportunities through tourism and adaptive reuse of existing structures.

How are we doing?

As of year-end 2004, the 10 counties in the Atlanta region had a total of 313 entries -- individual buildings, historic sites or entire neighborhoods - on the National Register of Historic Places.

In our 2005 online survey of local governments, we found that only 10 of 28 responding governments had a historic preservation program, and six had a formal Historic Preservation Commission. One local government offered local tax incentive programs for owners of historic properties.
