INDICATOR: Number of multi-jurisdictional organizations and authorities

Why is this important?

Multi-jurisdictional groups provide leaders and the public with consistent, structured ways to handle numerous issues and concerns shared by county and municipal governments throughout the region.

How are we doing?

In 2004, Atlanta region county and municipal governments relied on at least 25 formal and an unknown number of informal multi-jurisdictional partnerships to address a myriad of issues affecting the region. The issues addressed by these groups range from economic development to water and sewer services to hospitals, jails, recreation and housing.

According to recent data from the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, 13 of the 25 formal, government-appointed multi-jurisdictional bodies in the Atlanta region are devoted to one issue: economic development. Six focus on water and sewer services, and two focus on hospitals. Few local governments in the region coordinate on the development of their comprehensive or land use plans with other jusrisdictions.
