INDICATOR: Differences in spending per pupil among school systems in the region

Why is this important?

Spending per pupil is one objective measure for assessing disparities in financial resources for public education throughout the region. Per-pupil spending includes essentials (such as state-mandated teacher/student ratios and physical space) as well as upgrades (such as state-of-the-art computer technology or science equipment).

How are we doing?

Average per-pupil spending in the Atlanta region was $7,218 per student in 2003, up almost $1,000 per pupil since 2000 (the most recent data available).

Per pupil spending caries significantly across the region and is a measure of educational resources to help children and young people learn. Higher spending per pupil does not necessarily equate to higher student achievement.
