INDICATOR: Differences in the ratios of computers to students in public schools
Why is this important?
Computer-based learning, computer tools such as word processing and multimedia capability, and access to the Internet are essential parts of instruction in most school systems today. Comparisons of students' computer and Internet access are one indicator of socio-economic equity in school systems across the region.
How are we doing?
Student computer access increased slightly across the region in 2005 while access to non-Internet-based instructional computing declined slightly. On average, metro region schools offer one Internet-access computer for every three students. This is up from one per five students in 2002. The sharing ratios range from five students per computer in DeKalb to only two students per computer in each of the four City schools (Decatur, Atlanta, Buford and Marietta) and Cherokee County.
