INDICATOR: Prevalence of English as a Second Language (ESOL) programs
Why is this important?
As the Atlanta region's immigrant population continues to grow, many students need the small-group, personal attention that ESOL programs provide. Having an adequate number of trained ESOL instructors and programs for the region's changing demographics is a measure of educational equity.
How are we doing?
Our 2005 figures show that most of the school systems in the region continued the small but steady increase in the percentage of students enrolled in ESOL programs since 2001. Approximately 4.4 percent of all students in the Atlanta region were enrolled in ESOL classes in 2005.
In 2005-2006, five of the fourteen school systems in the region enrolled slightly less students enrolled slightly smaller percentages of ESOL students than 2004-2005. Buford City schools showed the largest increase in ESOL enrollment, up 2.2 percent from the previous year.
