GOAL 7: Create more political opportunities for people from disadvantaged groups.
INDICATOR: Rate of voter turnout among minority groups
Why is this important?
Higher turnout among minority voters confirms that minority groups believe the political process matters - and that minority voters can influence this process and elect leaders who will make a difference in their lives. In other words, a higher minority turnout indicates that minority voters believe their votes matter and their voices are heard.
How are we doing?
Registered minority voter turnout dropped by 40 percent between 74 percent in 2004, an all-time high, to 34 percent in 2006. This number is actually the lowest since 1998.
As in previous elections, overall regional turnout among registered minority voters was slightly lower than turnout among registered voters in the general population. Similar to overall turnout, Clayton County reported the lowest percentage of minority voter turnout at 29 percent. Again, Fayette, Cobb and DeKalb Counties posted the highest minority voter turnout numbers at 42, 37 and 36 percent respectively.
