GOAL 7: Create more political opportunities for people from disadvantaged groups.
INDICATOR: Number of minorities in elected offices
Why is this important?
As more diverse officeholders enter the political arena, they bring different issues and different perspectives to the political debate, as well as more opportunities for disadvantaged and under-represented populations.

How are we doing?
With the exception of females elected to local office, the number of minorities in elected office has decreased at all levels of government since 2005. Currently, four of Georgia's 13 U.S. Representatives are minorities, and all are males. In 2005, there was one female U.S. Representative. Both of Georgia's U.S. Senators are white males.
The most recent survey of cities and counties in the region, conducted in 2007 captured data from approximately 73 local governments. Among local governments that responded, 32 percent of elected officials are female and 68 percent are male. This indicates a slight increase in the number local elected females and a slight decrease of males. Minority representation is 16 percent, including black, Hispanic and Asian. Eight four percent of local elected officials in those local governments that responded are white. Based on results from the Census Bureau's 2004 American Community Survey, the race and ethnicity of the Atlanta Region's elected officials is not at all reflective of the demographics of the 28-countymetro Atlanta population.
