Community Involvement and Participation

In our first CREATE Community survey in late 2002, Atlanta region residents repeatedly told us, in a variety of ways, that they valued community involvement and participation. In defining this phrase, residents identified seven different goals highlighting desirable individual, societal or community interactions. For example, residents wanted strong local leaders, vibrant youth programs, citizen activism and citizen input into local decision-making, and more opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds and disadvantaged groups. Furthermore, despite a multitude of personal, family and professional commitments (including long commuting times), the data showed that hundreds of thousands of area residents are directly and personally involved, in myriad ways, in community activities.

How do Residents in the Atlanta region stay involved?

In a 2006 statistically representative phone survey of the region, we asked residents what they do and how often they engage in volunteer work. Thirty percent of respondents said that they have not volunteered at all during the past 12 months while almost 70 percent of those surveyed volunteer at least a few times a year to as often as more than once a week.

The causes for which residents volunteer most frequently include school/youth places of worship and the poor and/or homeless.
